Hexagon Metrology Acquires CMM Business of The L. S. Starrett Company

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. June 2, 2005. Hexagon Metrology North America and The L. S. Starrett Company announced today that Sheffield Measurement Inc, a division of Hexagon Metrology North America has acquired the Coordinate Measuring Machine product division of The L. S. Starrett Company (NYSE: SXT). The acquisition was effective June 1. The acquisition is limited to Starrett's coordinate measuring machine product line only; no other products were included in the deal.  Sheffield Measurement will assume customer service and support and spare parts sales for all of the Starrett machines currently in the field, as well as gaining all designs, plus new and used machine inventory associated with the Starrett CMM business.

Douglas A. Starrett, President and CEO of The L. S. Starrett Company, said, 밒n exploring our options for the coordinate measuring machine business, our focus has been on finding the best way to continue to support our existing CMM customers with the level of service and support that they have come to expect from Starrett. The acquisition of the coordinate measuring machine line by Hexagon Metrology North America will provide our customers with an excellent support and upgrade path now and in the future.?BR>
밪heffield's acquisition of the Starrett's CMM division provides Starrett a smooth transition from the CMM business and ensures that their loyal CMM customers are supported in the future,?said Bill Gruber, CEO of Hexagon Metrology North America. 밐exagon Metrology, and Sheffield Measurement in particular, was a good fit in the sense that we have an immediate software migration path for these customers using PC-DMIS, combined with an agile, customer focused service group.?BR>
밣rimarily this acquisition is about the service opportunity?continued Gruber. 밪tarrett wanted to ensure the customers would have someone to go to for factory parts and service, and Sheffield will supply these services by combining their team with Starrett's existing CMM-focused employees now located in Mt. Airy. We don't plan on continuing manufacture of these machines beyond the remaining inventory of new and used machines that we acquired in the deal. However, we will continue to make spares available, and of course, service.  The best news for Starrett customers, however, is that they now will have access to the world's leading metrology software package, PC-DMIS?/SPAN>, with more than 20,000 seats worldwide.?BR>
